Towing

Towing a dinghy at the lake

  • Take down the main, roll it up and secure it in the boat.

  • Secure the boom.

  • Wrap the jib around the forestay, secure it with the jib sheet.

  • Raise the centreboard 3/4

Towing alongside

A dinghy can be towed by holding it tight to the side of a rigid inflatable boat (RIB).

Single boat towed astern

  • Use the main sheet as painter and feed it through the tow ring.

  • Wrap it once around the mast and hold the end in your hand during the tow.

  • Tie the other end to the tow line (e.g. Alpine butterfly bend or Icicle hitch).

  • Sit far back and steer to the side of the motorboat wash.

It may be possible to use the tow line from the tow-boat directly to feed it through the tow ring, wrap it around the mast and hold it.

Towing multiple boats simultaneously

Several boats can be towed astern simultaneously by applying a fishbone pattern method:

Boats are alternately attached onto a long tow rope with individual painters.
