Tacking & Gybing

Tacking

Watch this video from 21:00 minutes in super slow motion. The skipper already has the tiller extension on the side. We start with the tiller extension in front of the chest:

  • Back foot on far side.

  • Bring tiller extension from microphone grip in front of your chest to the side for frying pan handle grip (use good fingering for this, no help with the sheet hand!!).

  • Initiate tack.

  • Bring tiller to the middle as the boom comes over.

  • Point tiller extension to the other side.

  • Cross over, sit down and steer behind your back (for a while so that you learn how to do this well).

  • Hold the tiller extension with your sheet hand (index finger and thumb pointing to centre of boat - frying pan handle grip).

  • Let go of the tiller extension with your other hand and grab the main sheet.

  • Let go of the main sheet with your tiller hand and use good fingering technique to bring the tiller extension in front of your chest.

When there is more room than in the Vagabond you can use a technique where you leave the tiller extension in front of your chest.

In light winds you should roll the boat a fair bit with either technique.
